About West Virginia

The story of West Virginia

West Virginia is Almost Heaven — Blue Ridge mountains, Shenandoah rivers and the deepest gorge east of the Rockies.

History & heritage

West Virginia broke from Virginia during the Civil War and was admitted as the 35th state in 1863, the only state formed by seceding from the Confederacy. With the state motto Montani semper liberi and a founding year of 1863, West Virginia carries a history you can wear on your chest — that's what our print-on-demand apparel is here for.

Geography & landscape

Entirely within the Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia has more rugged terrain than any state east of the Mississippi and holds the New River Gorge — the newest U.S. national park. Covering 24,230 sq mi, West Virginia lies in the Appalachian region and runs on Eastern time.

Culture, food and traditions

Mountaineer football, John Denver anthems, whitewater on the New River, and Appalachian bluegrass shape the Mountain State. From regional flavors like pepperoni roll, ramps, biscuits and gravy to festivals such as Bridge Day and Vandalia Gathering, the culture of West Virginia shows up in every collection we design.

Sports, colleges and community

Home teams like Mountaineers, Thundering Herd and universities such as West Virginia, Marshall anchor communities across the state — and inspire many of our West Virginia designs.

Parks, landmarks and wildlife

Landmarks like New River Gorge Bridge, Harpers Ferry, Blackwater Falls, Seneca Rocks and protected lands such as New River Gorge, Harpers Ferry, Monongahela NF give West Virginia its outdoor identity. The state animal is the Black Bear, the state bird is the Cardinal, and the state tree is the Sugar Maple — all of which show up in our nature and park collections.
