History & heritage

Admitted in 1890 as the 43rd state, Idaho was home to the Nez Perce and Shoshone before mining and Oregon Trail traffic opened the territory. Idaho holds more wilderness than any state outside Alaska — Sawtooths, Snake River Plain and Hells Canyon (deepest gorge in North America). Covering 83,569 sq mi, Idaho lies in the West region and runs on Mountain time.
